West River Road Entrance Mound, 2009

The April 19, 2009 photo was of the Lot 11 hydrant vault just installed by Precision Directional Boring on April 9th.  This vault would be incorporated into a second privacy mound for Lot 12 to block West River Road traffic headlights for the house on Lot 12.  The soil for this mound would come from the widening of the entrance from West River Road to a point just beyond the first turnaround driveway.

A view, also on April 19, 2009, from the north of the Lot 11 hydrant vault showing the area where the entrance privacy mound would be built when Kodiak widened the entrance driveway for the common drive for Lots 10, 11, 12 and 13.  Following the Precision Directional Boring installation, I had placed fabric and Cyprus bark onto the hydrant vault mound.

While Kodiak was enjoying a May 2nd Saturday, I busied myself with applying landscaping fabric & Cyprus bark to the mounds.  I had reached the hydrant vault mound by 5 PM and had anchored the fabric with some bark.

By 8 PM on the 2nd of May, I applied all the bark that I needed to anchor the landscape fabric for the night.  On the way back to the Lot 10 house, I was treated with a gorgeous sunset.

Before beginning work on the entrance mound, I had mentioned to Tom Hricovec of Kodiak that I had observed water oozing from a location near the right of way for West River Road.  Since there had been a gas service line to Lot 13 connected near that location, I suspected that Columbia Gas Company had broken through a drainage tile which drained the large farmer's field to the south of the Lakeview Rural Reservation property.  Tom agreed to install a 4-inch drainage pipe between that clay tile and a nearby catch basin that was connected to a culvert under West River Road.

Armed with my trusty shovel, I found the source of the oozing.

It was a small side job, but essential to the success of the overall project.

Simultaneously with the widening of the West River Road common driveway entrance, Kodiak moved the excavated topsoil to the near-by privacy mound.

The mound grew as topsoil was added to it.  Some of the soil was placed directly by the backhoe.

Moving of other topsoil required utilizing the dump truck.

As the mound was shaped by Paul and his dozer or the Bobcat, I covered it with the landscaping fabric and Cyprus bark.

The mound was completed by Kodiak and I had placed the landscaping fabric on it then covered the fabric with the Cyprus bark.

This is a view from the southeast from the entrance driveway of the mound as it had progressed by June 4th.  Note that the pink granite rock is moved farther away from the TPL line to be a part of the mound landscape and had been pushed back to nestle against the base of the mound.  I had begun planting shrubs and perennials and also begun installing an edging to the mound.

Kodiak also added several large rocks to offset the size of the hydrant vault behind them.
